It accumulates instead in the margins — in the fifteen minutes an employee spends hunting for a compatible charger before a client call, in the $45 replacement adapter ordered through an expedited procurement request, in the IT technician who spends a Friday afternoon sorting through a cabinet of tangled, unlabeled power bricks that may or may not belong to hardware the company still owns.
Charging infrastructure fragmentation is one of the most pervasive and persistently underestimated cost centers in corporate IT. And for organizations managing mixed hardware ecosystems — a reality for the overwhelming majority of US businesses — the financial exposure is considerably larger than most procurement leaders recognize.

For IT procurement leaders, this convergence creates a genuine strategic opportunity. Organizations willing to make USB-C standardization an explicit criterion in their hardware procurement policies can, over a two-to-three-year refresh cycle, substantially reduce the connector diversity in their environments. Laptops, smartphones, tablets, and an expanding range of peripherals now support USB-C Power Delivery, meaning a single high-quality charger can, in principle, serve multiple device categories.
The financial case is compelling. Multi-port USB-C charging stations — capable of simultaneously powering a laptop, a smartphone, and a tablet from a single wall outlet — are available from reputable manufacturers at price points well below the combined cost of the individual proprietary chargers they replace. For organizations outfitting conference rooms, shared workspaces, or hotel-style hot-desking environments, the consolidation dividend is immediate and tangible.
Navigating the Transition Period
Standardization is a destination, not a switch that can be flipped. Most organizations will spend several years in a transitional state, managing legacy devices that predate USB-C adoption alongside newer hardware that embraces it. That transition period requires its own tactical approach.
First, procurement teams should resist the temptation to replenish legacy charger inventory as attrition occurs. Charger fragmentation, at its root, is a policy failure. It emerges when hardware procurement decisions are made without explicit consideration of power ecosystem compatibility, and it persists when IT departments lack the mandate or the budget authority to enforce standardization retroactively.
Addressing it requires elevating power infrastructure from an afterthought to an explicit component of hardware procurement policy. That means specifying USB-C Power Delivery compliance as a procurement criterion alongside processor specifications and memory configurations. It means including charging accessories in total cost of ownership calculations rather than treating them as negligible consumables. And it means giving IT leadership the organizational standing to enforce those standards consistently across departments that have historically made their own purchasing decisions.
